CSES extends scientific and technical support to various government departments and local governments in different areas such as Geographical Information System (GIS) preparation of detailed project reports (DPR) and capacity building of stakeholders and inputs for planning various programmes. CSES is recognised as an off campus training centre of the outreach programme of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun. Courses are offered in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System. The Centre is an accredited agency of the Department of Local Self Government, Government of Kerala for providing technical service in GIS Mapping, Information dissemination, capacity building and preparation of DPR. As an accredited agency, the GramaPanchayats, Municipalities and Municipal Corporations in Kerala can engage CSES in such activities without following the tendering procedure. Click here to download the accreditation order. CSES uses digital mapping and GIS services in its projects. Projects in which such applications have been made use of include: Preparation of River Bank Atlas of Periyar River (the largest river in Kerala) and Uppalariver for the Government of Kerala. Digital maps of land use, physical features and manmade features were generated. Digital Mapping of sand deposits of in the river beds of both Periyar and Uppalarivers were also undertaken. GIS maps with different layers were also created for different Integrated Watershed Management Projects and in developing District Perspective Plans under MGNREGA. The work included digital mapping of the water resources in the project area. The Centre also completed the Digital Mapping of Tourism Resources in Kumarakom, a well-known tourist destination, for the Tourism Resorts Kerala Limited. The project included the GIS database preparation of the natural and other resources. During the last ten years, the Centre has been preparing DPRs of watershed development projects under the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP). DPRs were prepared for ten IWMP projects in different parts of Kerala. Technical support to these projects included community mobilisation, participatory rural appraisal (PRA), delineation of watershed boundaries, identification of watershed development interventions, formation of user groups and SHGs work estimation and preparation of detailed action plan. DPRs were also prepared for different GramaPanchayats and Municipalities for the Kerala Local Government Service Delivery Project, a World Bank funded project of the Government of Kerala. Need assessment studies of the local governments were undertaken prior to the preparation of DPRs. The Centre is empanelled as a Technical Support Organisation of the Department of Rural Development for the preparation of DPR for the watershed development projects. The Centre also has demonstrated ability to undertake sand auditing of rivers.
