Study on Indebtedness of Rural Households in Kerala and Role of Microfinance Institutions (Ongoing)

The ongoing study conducted with financial support from the Government of Kerala, examines the status of indebtedness of rural households in Kerala, based on a sample household survey in around 500 households across the state. The study also examines the role of Micro Finance Institutions, especially Kudumbashree in the provision of credit to households.  This study is of great policy relevance as Kerala reports the third highest level of rural indebtedness in the 70th round of the National Sample Survey conducted in 2013. There is also an increase in the reporting of debt induced suicides in the state.
